A hackathon is a 24-36 hour event on weekends, where college students come from near and far to collaborate on hardware related and programming projects.
The food and whole event is always free.
Also, you are often given a free t-shirt and a collection of goodies that vary at each hackathon.
Students at all levels are welcome to attend, so it can be very easy to learn from or help teach your peers.
The students work together to design their very own ideas and usually end up presenting their work in front of judges for a chance at cool tech-related prizes.
Hackathons are typically sponsored by companies in the software business, so it is also a great place to connect with potential employers.
Many of the hackathons that ACM members attend can be located on Major League Hack's website.
